Context

A market leading auto major was in the process of re-defining its progression processes, particularly those from supervisory levels to managerial.

The progression to managerial levels had been largely based on line managers’ functional assessments. Most people made the low functional mark and were promoted.

Mid-career behavioural assessments were showing wide gaps in managerial capabilities, which resulted in the need for a more robust assessment early on in the career.

Impact

There has been a marked improvement in the leadership calibre of first time managers, as judged through formal and informal means.

There has been a move from generic behavioural development at this level to business, function and individual driven development.

Improvement in line manager capability and engagement as well as accountability with respect to talent decisions.

Approach

BT designed a virtual Assessment Centre, including a series of simulation instruments as well as assessment by the immediate and skip managers. Customised exercises provided participants the opportunity to demonstrate the unique behaviours.

Assessments of over 700 individuals are carried out each year on the technology platform. BT does the backend assessments and reporting with individual participant report with development guidelines.

Analytics at the division and function level with insights that prepare the organisation for evidence-based capability building.
