As a manager, creating a culture of giving and receiving feedback within the team is necessary, but oftentimes not easy. The MARCH pillars—Meaningful, Accountable, Real-Time, Constructive, and Honest—serve as a guide to ensure that feedback is impactful and drives positive change. Here are some key practices to remember when providing feedback, using the MARCH approach.

M – Meaningful
Feedback should always have a clear purpose. Before initiating a conversation, ask yourself what you hope to achieve and ensure the discussion is relevant and focused. Gather specific examples and data beforehand to support your points, and clearly articulate the “what,” “when,” and “who” right from the start. This helps in setting the tone for a constructive dialogue and ensures that the feedback is perceived as valuable and relevant.

A – Accountable
Make sure the employee understands the feedback by clarifying key points during the conversation. Collaboratively decide on actionable steps that both parties will take to address the feedback, and agree on a process for follow-up. This creates a sense of shared responsibility and helps ensure that feedback leads to tangible improvements.

R – Real-Time
Providing feedback in real-time is essential for it to be effective. Don’t wait for annual reviews or scheduled meetings—give feedback as soon as possible, whether it’s positive or otherwise. Make it a habit to provide feedback regularly and keep a consistent record of these discussions.

C – Constructive
Effective feedback should focus on behaviours and their impacts without assigning blame. Clearly describe what was observed and discuss how it met or fell short of expectations. Outline your expectations regarding skills, behaviours, or tasks, and offer suggestions for improvement.

H – Honest
Transparency is key to building trust in the feedback process. Ensure that the information you provide is accurate and based on facts. Be open to receiving new information or evidence that might change your perspective, and adjust accordingly. Following through on any commitments made during the feedback session further reinforces trust and demonstrates a commitment to the individual’s development.

Effective feedback not only helps individuals grow but also contributes to the overall success of the team and organisation. By integrating the MARCH pillars into your feedback practices, you create an environment that encourages continuous improvement and fosters a culture of trust and accountability.
